Sorah Abasa ( He frowned ) - Verses Number 42
عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ( 1 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 1
The Prophet frowned and turned away
أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ ( 2 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 2
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ ( 5 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 5
As for he who thinks himself without need,
فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ ( 6 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 6
To him you give attention.
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ ( 9 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 9
While he fears [Allah],
فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ ( 10 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 10
From him you are distracted.
كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ ( 11 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 11
No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ ( 12 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 12
So whoever wills may remember it.
فِي صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ ( 13 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 13
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍ ( 14 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 14
Exalted and purified,
بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ ( 15 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 15
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ ( 16 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 16
Noble and dutiful.
Cursed is man; how disbelieving is he.
From what substance did He create him?
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ ( 20 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 20
Then He eased the way for him;
ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ ( 21 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 21
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
Then let mankind look at his food -
How We poured down water in torrents,
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
فَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا ( 27 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 27
And caused to grow within it grain
وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا ( 28 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 28
And grapes and herbage
وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا ( 29 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 29
And olive and palm trees
وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا ( 30 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 30
And gardens of dense shrubbery
وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا ( 31 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 31
And fruit and grass -
مَّتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ ( 32 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 32
[As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock.
فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ ( 33 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 33
But when there comes the Deafening Blast
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ ( 35 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 35
And his mother and his father
وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ ( 36 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 36
And his wife and his children,
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ ( 38 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 38
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ ( 39 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 39
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ ( 41 ) Abasa ( He frowned ) - Ayaa 41
Blackness will cover them.
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.

  • WHY DO WE PRAY?Why does Man need to Pray?. After a long and hectic day at work, how difficult it is for a tired person to stand on the prayer-mat and concentrate on his prayers to Allah Almighty. Snuggled in a warm and cozy bed, how difficult it is to get up at the call of Mu’adhdhin: “Come to prayer, come to success.” The famous doctor and philosopher Ibn Sina (Avicenna), recalls such a moment in his life. Once cold and icy night, he and his slave were resting in an inn in a remote part of Khurasan. During the night he felt thirsty and shouted out to his slave to get him some water. The salve had no desire to leave his warm bed, so he pretended not to hear Avicenna’s call. But finally after repeated calls he reluctantly got up and went to fetch the water. A little while later, the melodious sound of the Adhan filled the air. Avicenna began to think about the person calling the believers to prayer.

  • Like a GarmentI welcome you to our ‘Like A Garment’ e-book, an initiative that seeks to educate Muslims to find conjugal bliss in their marriages. The initiative is called ‘Like A Garment’, from the famous Quranic phrase of spouses being like garments to one another. The website has two aims: to disseminate information about this topic (which will, Insha Allah, be beneficial to all Muslims, single and married), and to garner, via anonymous questionnaires, the problems and concerns that the Muslims of our times are facing in this area (which will help me better prepare future lectures).
